Producer Spotlight: Les Bottes Rouges

Producer Spotlight: Les Bottes Rouges

People often ask me what wines I'm most excited about right now, and for the last couple of years my answer has been the Jura. A visit to the region a few months ago cemented these wines as some of my absolute, all-time favorites.

For long time subscribers this should come as no surprise I suppose, the wines from the Jura share many commonalities with Burgundy. Much like Burgundy these are dynamic, ethereal, effusive wines of place and poise, not power. But what strikes me most is a deep mineral streak that runs throughout the wines. A saline kick that makes the wines pop on the palate.

Today, I'm thrilled to offer a trio of reds from the minuscule (even by Jura standards) estate of Les Bottes Rouges. I feel grateful to have secured these as quantities are small and worldwide demand has never been higher. I encourage you to take advantage of this offer, because these exemplify some of the most beautiful and exciting wines on the planet.

Poulsard 'Tôt ou Tard' 2021 $67.99

Poulsard grown on Jura's classic marl soils in Arbois. Grapes are de-stemmed, crushed, and spend 20 days on the skins. After pressing, the wine ages for six months in old 600L barrels before bottled unfined and unfiltered.

A vibrant and high-toned wine with tart cranberries, mountain strawberries, rose petal and red liquorice on the nose. The palate has more crisp red-fruit in spades backed by zingy freshness and lithe tannins. A wine of immense complexity despite its weightless feel. Fans of red Burgundy take note!
Poulsard & Trousseau 'Boomerang' 2020 $67.99

A classic Jura blend of equal parts Poulsard and Trousseau from a selection of parcels comprised of marl. Grapes are de-stemmed and ferment in stainless steel tank where the wine rests for a few months before bottling.

The purity of fruit is front and center on this wine. Bright, ruby red grapefruit, lingonberry, bing cherries, and a touch of pepper burst from the glass. The palate is a distillation of fruit flavors backed by delicate florals and a faintly balsamic note that adds depth and nuance to this buoyant and fresh cuvée.
Pinot Noir 'Néo' 2020 $64.99

100% Pinot Noir from clay-dominant sites in Arbois. The grapes undergo whole-cluster maceration and fermentation. After a short elevage in tank for a few months the wine is bottled without filtration.

The foreground is dominated by ripe black fruit, with fresh-picked blackberries and wild, brambly black cherries. There's a hint of a black tea and spice teased underneath the bouquet of fruit. The palate builds on this with more dark fruit perfectly balanced by edgy minerals and a backbone of acidity. This is a dark, supple yet refreshing Pinot.

Making a career out of a hobby is something most people can only dream of. In that regard, Jean-Baptiste Menigoz is living the dream. Once a teacher in the Jura working with special-needs children, Jean-Baptiste became infatuated with the wines of his friend Raphaël Monnier of Domaine Ratapoil. After an internship with Jura superstar Stephane Tissot and almost ten years of living the double life of school teacher and vigneron, Jean-Baptiste took the leap.

Now with his wife Jacqueline, they farm 7 hectares with varying soil types, all organic and biodynamic. Ever the experimentalist, Jean-Baptist makes an almost dizzying array of wines that seem to change every year, sometimes making two different wines from the same parcel in order to display the potential within. Though he may have started as a part-time winemaker, his commitment to innovation and exploration have yielded a stunning line up of wines.
