Producer Spotlight: Martin Texier 3-Pack

Producer Spotlight: Martin Texier 3-Pack

Being such a huge admirer of Eric Texier, I've been following the progress of his son Martin's own label over the past few years with keen interest. For the last five consecutive vintages, I've managed to taste each one released and it's been a fascinating and exciting journey. His wines have continued to improve and evolve, but for the current 2020 vintage, he's captured something quite magical. Never before have the wines tasted and felt THIS good.

While Martin's wines have always been bright and fresh, these '20's are astounding. The wines being offered today have a clarity, vividness and precision that I previously hadn't discovered in his wines. Consider it an extra layer of seriousness, even nuance, that has been added to the fun, fresh fruit of the past. Capturing a bit of his father's fastidious touch in the cellar, I can say without a doubt that these are the finest wines Martin has ever made. Not only is he filling his father's large shoes admirably, he is producing some of the most exciting wines in the Rhône today.

Martin Texier is no stranger to wine. His father Eric, famed nuclear engineer turned vigneron, has made a name for himself as one of the Rhône Valley's leading winemakers. While you might think it obvious that Martin should follow in his father's footsteps, the path to being a winemaker himself has taken several turns.

Originally going to university to study economics, he finished school, started studying music, and eventually became a DJ. This led to him spending time in New York, which in turn led to internships at two of the city's better known wine shops: Flatiron Wines in Manhattan and Uva Wines in Brooklyn. He fell in love with wine and realized that he wanted to return to his home and make his own.

With his path finally carved out, Martin rejoined his father in the Rhône and today farms around five hectares of vines; all traditional varietals of the region, including Marsanne, Roussanne, Cinsault, Syrah, and Grenache. Like his father, he farms everything organically and makes his wines with indigenous yeasts only. His wines are the future of the Rhône with a clear nod to the region's past.
Roussanne 2020 $34.99

100% Roussanne from young vines planted on granite soils. Grapes are directly pressed into concrete for fermentation before being racked into neutral oak barrels for élevage. Bottled unfined, unfiltered.

Textural and bright, the youthfulness of these vines is immediately apparent on the nose. Stone fruit like peaches and apricots burst from the glass alongside a touch of lemon and orange zest. The palate builds with brisk minerality and savory herbal notes, all contrasted by the almost surprisingly crisp and refreshing finish. Perfect with grilled fish or roast chicken.
Grenache 2020 $32.99

Entirely Grenache from 30 year-old vines planted on granite soils with veins of schist and limestone. Grapes are pressed by foot while still on the stems after a week long maceration. Racked before bottling without fining or filtration.

Texier's Grenache is as classic as they come yet tantalizing in its own way. Lush red raspberries and cherries are accentuated by floral notes. Red currants and vibrant acidity line up perfectly next to the light granitic spice. Serve al fresco with meats and cheeses next time you are in the mountains.
'Le Preyna' Rouge 2020 $32.99

A blend of 75% Cinsault and 25% Grenache from an older parcel for which the wine is named. Grapes are crushed, fermented, and pressed separately into concrete tanks for élevage before being blended right before bottling.

'Le Preyna' is Martin's 'everyday' red. This is a light bodied wine that is begging for a slight chill. Juicy red cherries and blackberries are carried through your palate with solid acidity and structure. There's a mineral vein and a touch of spice to tie everything together. A quintessential weeknight wine or better yet, a long Sunday lunch.
