Rosé Spotlight: 2024 Guiberteau Rosé

Rosé Spotlight: 2024 Guiberteau Rosé

I love the classics, and spare no words when waxing poetically about the legendary wines these historic domaines produce. Equally important however, are the wines from these domaines that push boundaries and challenge preconceived notions. Enter today's brisk and bristling Saumur Rosé from the vaunted Domaine Guiberteau.

For a domaine so well known for its world class Chenin and majestic Cabernet Franc, making an inexpensive pink wine would seem to be a waste of time. Why bother putting so much effort into producing rosé when all the other wines are some of the most highly prized and collected in the world? For Romain Guiberteau, blazing his own trail in pursuit of creating something truly unique matters just as much. His goal, as always, is to make profound and impactful wines by coupling his deep knowledge of tradition with innovation.

And while we'll always have a spot on our shelves for the salmon-colored cuvées from Provence, this rosé strikes a different chord. It offers the elegance and romance of Southern France's best, but with an undeniable Loire Valley precision that runs throughout. This is an extraordinary, energetic, electric rosé unlike any other.

100% Cabernet Franc sourced from a handful of esteemed plots in Saumur, including the revered hill of Brézé, Loire's unofficial Grand Cru. Organically grown and hand-harvested, the grapes are pressed using whole bunches, then fermented with ambient yeast in stainless steel, where it ages for 6 months prior to a light filtration and bottling.

A shimmering, light pink in the glass, the aromatics are fresh, bright and on full display here, busting with red currant, raspberry, rose water and fresh cut herbs. The bone-dry palate is packed with tart red fruit, cooling saline minerals and a touch of savory bell pepper. All set off by racy, tongue-tingling acidity and angular textures. A brilliant wine with tons of cut and verve from one of the world's top domaines.
The path to being a winemaker is not always a linear one. After struggling in law school, Romain Guiberteau decided to move home to the Loire and make wine. He comes from a long line of vignerons, his great grandfather laid the foundations for the modern domaine by initially recognizing the potential of Brézé, long before it was famous.

Romain returned to the domaine in 1996, hoping to find purpose after his failed stint at law school. With the help of Clos Rougeard's Nady Foucault, he's now put his family's estate back on the map as one of the best in the Loire.
